Business and Sales Strategy

Sensor Designs develops technology to bring optical measurement products into the hands of the consumer. These solutions range from handheld distance measurement products priced less than half of today’s lowest priced offerings to low-cost sensors for future generations of robotic consumer products.

The phrase “develops technology” is rather abstract so let’s start with an analogy to clarify. Imagine puzzle pieces lying on a table with a few key pieces missing. We figure out how to put the pieces together and then we make the missing pieces to complete the puzzle. Thus our technology consists of two parts; we develop a strategy (patents and know-how) enabling the simplest solution and then we design and manufacture key components to bring the solution together.

Our business model naturally follows from our technology strategy. We license manufacturers (lump-sum payments) for our patent and design know-how and then we sell key components enabling the solution. Providing our licensees key components allows the lowest time to market by eliminating the steep learning curve and staffing required assimilating a complex technology. This approach also results in an efficient value chain because the expense of developing and maintaining the technology is shared by the pool of licensees rather than each one requiring there own support infrastructure. We also provide engineering consulting to support manufacturing and to develop adaptations of our technology for unique applications.

Our sales strategy is primarily based on building an increasing pool of licensees, each purchasing larger numbers of chip sets. We will accomplish this goal with a marketing and applications engineering team looking for niche market segments and then following through with focused sales efforts keyed on the demonstration of a standard or customized solution to their problem. To help seed the market we preparing to manufacture and sell a miniature sensor module that allows initial penetration into a wide variety of sensing applications.
